Joshua 1: 8 says “This book of the law shall not depart out of YOUR MOUTH; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful”.
Notice in this verse, it is said that “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth”. It does not say that it “shall not depart from your mind.” Biblical meditation involves speaking God’s word with our mouth, not only mental contemplation. In addition, biblical meditation does not focus on a posture but on a Person.
The Hebrew word for meditation is the word וְהָגִ֤יתָ wə-hā-ḡî-ṯā which means to mutter, to speak under our breath in a low voice. The digestive process of a cow is a picture of meditation. A cow slowly chews his partly-digested food over and over again in his mouth before finally swallowing it. This process is called “ruminating.”
When we meditate on God’s Word, we can not get nourishment by simply reading it. To get the nutrition, we ponder it, we think it through, we mutter it under our breath like how a cow chews the cud. What we have fed, we bring it up, again and again, day and night until it is thoroughly digested. At this point, we suck all the juice and the nutrients out of God’s Word. We can extract peace, joy, power, anointing, love, rest, light, and so on.
There are also tons of good Christian books and literature written by qualified authors and scholars. Libraries are now one click accessible by the Internet. However, they can not replace Bible meditation. There is something powerful in Scripture meditation because the word of God is living and active (Hebrew 4:12)
The meditation part does not stop at the appointed times of devotion only but will continue all day, day, and night like it is instructed in the verse.
Bible meditation is God’s way of prosperity and success.
